Mission Statement

The Henrietta Weill Memorial Child Guidance Clinic provides the services
and resources necessary to prevent and treat emotional and behavioral problems for
Kern County children and
their families.

For parents, foster parents or guardians of children
who are clients of the Child Guidance Clinic.

One of the most difficult jobs is that of being a parent. How do you handle tough situations such as misbehavior, peer pressure and abuse? Who do you talk to when your child seems lost, depressed, angry or withdrawn?
The Child Guidance Clinic offers Active Parenting
© groups to help parents and guardians of our clients deal with problem situations. We understand how important the parent's role is for a child's treatment and well-being, and we want to help you as a parent understand and deal with these situations accurately.
          Our Active Parenting
© groups are designed to assist you with the problems you and your child are facing today. Using the Active Parenting© curriculum, trained clinical staff conduct the education training groups in English and Spanish to teach parenting skills and to increase parental effectiveness. In this type of environment, you will meet other parents who are experiencing similar problems with their children and will share ways to deal with these situations.

Active Parenting© Information groups are offered each month. Times vary in order to meet differing family schedules. Parenting groups are available in English and Spanish and are offered at the Clinic and certain school campuses.

Why a Parenting Group?

  • We believe that families must work as a team to make long-term changes.

  • We believe that anyone can benefit from fresh ideas on how to care for children.

  • These sessions teach skills that your child's therapist may ask you to practice at home to reinforce therapy.

  • By teaching you these tools in a group setting, your child's therapist will have more time to focus on your child.

  • A group format allows parents to share their own experiences and learn from each other.
